Ratchet at the Transformers wiki
personality: Most people's initial impression of Ratchet is of someone perpetually irritated. While that may be true, Ratchet is mostly irritated by his comrades' apparent inability to be careful and not take risks in their bid to end the war. As the only one on Earth capable of repairing them, he actually worries greatly about the other Autobots, since he can only do so much with the limited technology he has. His inability to do his absolute best makes him feel helpless and frustrated, which unfortunately ends up being taken out on anyone who accidentally ends up saying the wrong thing. Ratchet doesn't feel like he needs to be polite and courteous. He has seen far too much death and pain to censor himself for the sake of sparing his patient's feelings, not when every second is the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, this has transferred over into his everyday life, making him hard to get along with most of the time. He does not appreciate any interruptions when he’s working, and makes no secret of it.
But underneath the gruff exterior, Ratchet is a good bot. He genuinely cares for his comrades, to the point that he will ignore his own well-being in search of something to make life easier for the Autobots. He sometimes has to be reminded to take care of himself, because Ratchet refuses to rest until he’s absolutely certain any bot under his care is stable and out of immediate danger of offlining. And as much as Ratchet claims to dislike the tiny organics his team has taken in, he is rather impressed with the resiliency and ingenuity they show in the face of overwhelming odds. He's extremely loyal to those he knows he can trust with his life and would gladly give his own life in return if it would save a friend.Ratchet has been so embittered by war that he won't help anyone considered an enemy without a good reason or a direct order. He sees helping them as tactical follies: by helping a Decepticon or a MECH agent, that’s one more enemy the Autobots will have to deal later on. But he can be a competent leader when needed, since he's not afraid to make hard decisions and voice his opinions, even at the risk of seeming insubordinate. However, Ratchet will always yield to Optimus Prime's orders, even if he'll grumble about it. He's never afraid of saying exactly what he's thinking, even when it'll make someone else mad. When he does exercise tact, it's usually because the topic is sensitive and/or could end up upsetting one of the human children.
Ratchet is also an extremely private individual. He hardly ever offers information about his past willingly, use vague phrasings to avoid admitting anything about himself. He dislikes discussing his feelings, closely guarding any emotions that might make him seem weak and vulnerable. The times he has failed to save or couldn't completely repair someone always weigh on his mind, making him worry that he could end up failing once again to help. Sometimes it's enough to even make him freeze, even if for just a moment. But every time he saves a life or sees a bot leave his medbay fully repaired, it makes it all worth it.
abilities/powers: Ratchet is made of a durable metal stronger than anything on Earth, so he can take quite a beating before having to retreat, even though he is the Autobot's medic. He is mostly unaffected by human weaponry and bullets, unless the weapon can disrupt electrical currents. Electrical weapons can disrupt his systems and incapacitate him long enough to be hurt badly. He's resistant to extreme temperature changes to a certain degree: he can only spend so much time in artic temperatures or extremely high heat above 100C (let's say about an hour), but otherwise isn't particularly affected by temperature changes.
Ratchet can transform himself into an unmarked ambulance, and has short swords built into both his arms. They cannot be removed as they are literally built into his systems. Once reduced in height and mass, his vehicle mode will be reduced to scale and much too small for any humans to ride inside. Despite being their medical officer, Ratchet is more than capable of holding his own on the battlefield, even though he can is restricted to close combat only due to his lack of guns or blasters. However, he is more than capable of using long range weapons when in a pinch. Despite being rather stocky, Ratchet is actually rather agile, though he's not a particularly fast runner.
As a robotic being, Ratchet has internal systems that allow him to scan his surroundings, though he's only capable of scanning for radio frequencies and life signs of other living beings. And like all Cybertronians, Ratchet has a scanning system that allows him to scan a machine similar in scale to himself and take its form. However, his vehicle mode is much more durable than a human model, able to take head-on collisons and rough terrain without being completely disabled unless a vulnerable area has been damaged. His top speed is about 120 mph. He can switch between robot mode and vehicle mode in seconds. In Prime canon, the ability to transform comes from a biomechanism known as a T-cog, which can be removed relatively easily if someone knows what they're doing. Damage to this makes it impossible for a Cybertronian to transform, even their ability to convert their body parts to built-in weapons. While it is possible to repair this T-cog, it's a delicate procedure and can only really be done right by someone with the proper knowledge of Cybertronian anatomy. However, there is very little information available in canon that points out what exactly counts as a biomechanism beyond the T-cog and vocal processors (voice boxes).
Ratchet has been a medic for almost all of his long life, so he most likely knows more about Cybertronian anatomy than any other Autobot or Decepticon alive. But like any human doctor, sometimes there are things even he can't fix. Ratchet is also a scientist, though medicine is his speciality. He has managed to almost perfect a formula for synethetic Energon, which is the lifeblood of all Cybertronians. He is a capable communications officer, though he's not a particularly skilled hacker, and he is often trumped by Rafael's knowledge of computers and hacking.
first person sample:
I don't know how you organics manage to get anything done considering your average height. It's impossible to get anything done when it takes forever to get from place to place.
[Despite how scathing the words might seem, there's a faint undercurrent of unease.]
But I didn't do this just to disparage organics. I have a...favor to ask. I need access to tools. The more the better.
I don't have much to offer in return, but I can offer my services to repair anything mechanical if needed to anyone who can help me find some. Or I can return the favor at a later time, if that doesn't interest anyone.
And here is a dear_mun post
third person sample: Ratchet couldn’t help but feel useless, standing at his computer terminal, tense and poised in case an emergency ground bridge was needed. Everyone else had something to contribute to the battle; each and every one could rush headlong into battle without a second thought, while Ratchet had to stay behind and monitor vital signs and communications. He was good at what he did. But knowing that they all depended on him to stay out of battle so he could take care of the aftermath didn’t make him happy. Knowing he wasn't able to help stop his team from getting hurt was frustrating, especially since no matter how many Decepticons they deactivated, there always seemed to be more to take their place.
Even more galling, the human girl Miko seemed bound and determined to rush straight into danger. He had enough to worry about with the Autobots. He couldn’t keep his eyes on the tiny organic all the time and was forced to leave her in the hands of Jack and Rafael. As much as they tried, they couldn’t always seem to keep her from running off either. He was surprised his neuroprocessor hadn’t short-circuited already from the amount of stress he was under daily trying to keep everyone safe and away from the prying eyes of nosy humans.
And they wondered why he was in a bad mood all the time. Ratchet was convinced he had been suffering from this processor-ache ever since Arcee and Bumblebee had come back to base with the three children.
So far the comm had been silent, life signs strong and unwavering. But it was quiet, too quiet, even with the ever present chatter of the human children behind him. His hand was halfway to the comm button when it suddenly came to life, the calm request for a ground bridge back to base managing to soothe most of his frazzled circuits. Ratchet heaved a sigh and activated the ground bridge, scowl firmly in place as the other bots made their way through the ground bridge with Bumblebee supported by Optimus Prime.
“What happened this time? Never mind, set him down over here so I can take a look at him.”
Ratchet grabbed his scanner and started in on Bumblebee, ignoring the beeped protests with ease.
“Bumblebee I am not letting you up until I’ve repaired you, so stop fidgeting and let me work!”
The other bot seemed to deflate at Ratchet’s words. Finally. Now he could get some work done. He didn’t even mind Rafael hanging around and waiting, because at least he could worry quietly.
